Greater Toronto Area Agricultural Action Plan
& GTA Agricultural Profile Update

Action Plan
The Greater Toronto Area (GTA) Regions of Durham, Halton, Peel and York and the City of Toronto, in partnership with the GTA Federations of Agriculture, and with the support of the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food, have prepared an Agricutural Action Plan. The purpose of the Action Plan is to keep the GTA Agricultural industry competitive given the economic, land use and labour pressures faced by farmers.

On March 29th, 2003, a workshop was held at the York Region South Services Centre in Richmond Hill as part of the process of developing the GTA Agricultural Action Plan.
As a follow up to the workshop, a public GTA Agricultural Symposium to consider the proposed Action Plan was held on Saturday November 22nd, 2003 in the Gambrel Barn at Country Heritage Park in Milton.

Input recieved at the Symposium was incorporated into a Final GTA Agricultural Action Plan which was formally endorsed in principle by the four GTA Regional Councils, and supported by the GTA Federations of Agriculture, the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food (OMAF), the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing (MAH), and the Ministry of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada.

On September 6th, 2005 the GTA Agricultural Action Plan was officially launched at the Chesslawn Vineyards and Winery in Bolton.

GTA Demographic Profile - 1986 to 2006

The GTA demographic Profile depicts demographic trends in the Greater Toronto Area from 1986 to 2006 by using Statistics Canada data from five Census collection periods: 1986, 1991, 1996, 2001 and 2006.

The GTA Demographic Profile was developed to identify emerging consumer groups and provide background to additional Action Items identified in the GTA Agricultural Action Plan. The Profle also provides the agricultural industry with Statistics Canada Census Data to assist in identifying GTA markets and their geographic locations through population, immigration, and economic Census data.

GTA Agricultural Action Committee

In September 2005 a GTA Agricultural Action Committee was established, with members representing regional municipalities, OMAFRA, federations of agriculture, and the agricultural industry.  There is a GTA Agricultural Action Committee website.
